Day 1: Historical Insights and Royal Residences
Start your adventure in Kigali, the vibrant capital of Rwanda, where you'll depart early for Butare. Here, you’ll step back in time at the historical Palace of King Rudahigwa, preserved as it was during his reign. Nearby, pay respects at the tomb of King Mutara III and Queen Rosalie Gicanda, offering a poignant glimpse into Rwanda’s royal history. The day continues with a visit to the Ethnographic Museum of Butare, home to one of the finest collections of Rwandan culture and history.
Day 2: Primate Encounters and Forest Adventures
Rise early for a trek through the high-altitude Cyamudongo forest, a haven for chimpanzees. This challenging yet rewarding hike allows you to observe these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat. In the afternoon, experience the magic of seeing the world’s largest known group of Colobus monkeys, native to the Albertine Rift and notable for their striking appearance and playful antics.
Day 3: Scenic Return with Lakeside Views
Conclude your safari with a scenic drive back to Kigali via Kibuye, where you'll enjoy a peaceful boat tour on Lake Kivu. Visit Napoleon Island, famous for its colony of fruit-eating giant bats, and soak in the panoramic views and serene atmosphere before heading back to Kigali in the evening.

Itineraries
Day 1
Kigali-Butare-Nyungwe
Departure from Kigali to Butare at 8:00 AM, visiting King Rudahigwa's Palace (1931) around 10:00 AM. The residence of King Mutara III Rudahigwa is preserved as it was during his reign. This palace gives visitors a glimpse of how the Rwandan king lived. On the neighboring hill "Mwima", you can see the tomb of King Mutara III and his wife Queen Rosalie Gicanda. Then, you will proceed to Butare to visit the Ethnographic Museum of Butare. This museum, inaugurated in 1989, houses one of the finest ethnographic collections in Africa. Both colonial history and archaeological artifacts are displayed across seven rooms, giving all visitors an insight into Rwandan culture.
Lunch at the Ibis Hotel. Then, transfer to Nyungwe forest or towards Cyangugu.

Day 2
Nyungwe
After a very early breakfast (departure at 6 AM) to reach Cyamudongo forest located at 2000 meters above sea level, in search of chimpanzees. You will follow them depending on their location in the trees and depending on their location, you may need to walk from 3 to 7 hours. Lunch at Guisakura Guest house, then in the afternoon, visit the Colobus monkeys. 400 Colobus monkeys are known to inhabit Nyungwe National Park, which is the largest group recorded in the world. Limited to the Albertine Rift ecosystem, this primate is easily distinguishable from others due to its black fur contrasted with a white snowy beard around its face. Then, transfer to the hotel.

Day 3
Nyungwe - Kigali via Kibuye
Departure at 8 AM for your return to Kigali via Kibuye (lunch in Kibuye), boat tour on Lake Kivu (visit to Napoleon Island and its colony of fruit-eating giant bats), then return to Kigali in the evening.
